Protoyping solution with Harvard MetaLab

Problem

How can we design for trust and truth online, and how do the design and incentives of social media companies influence individual choices and major social movements? prototyping.

Approach

Discussion, design thinking, and physical prototyping.

Role

Workshop participant led by Sarah Newman at Harvard MetaLab.

Process

01 Participants had to bring the following materials to the workshop:

- a black t-shirt, black sweater, or piece of black fabric
- something to write with (pen/pencil)
- something to write on (paper)
- something shiny
- something soft
- something long
- something with an edge
- something that changes shape
- something that stretches
- something stringy or string-like
- something that sticks or is sticky
- something that crumples
- 2 things that rhyme with each other (for example, a "fork" and a "cork")
- something no one else will bring
02 Discussion on communication, trust, and truth online with Sarah Newman and Arushi Saxena.
03 Prototyping a solution for the problem using analogue materials.

Research findings

- The final prototype addresses the issue of the stickiness of social media platforms using earplugs and post-its. The final output is available here.

I conducted an interview with Arushi Saxena, who was part of the Twitter ethics team at that time, based on this workshop. The interview is available here.
